Accountability, Adaptability & A Little Bit of Chaos
Why I Went Quiet, What I’ve Learned & How It All Ties Back to Training
Keeping Myself Accountable (Kinda…)
One thing I always try to do is keep myself accountable—do what I say I’ll do. Doesn’t mean I always succeed, but sure, I give it a crack! So, I’ll hold my hands up… I let ye down on the weekly newsletter. But you know what? That’s grand, and here’s why (also applies to training!)
1) Priorities Shift
The last few weeks have been wild—building Tribal, launching a cycle club (madness!), growing my coaching, and juggling the day job. While exciting, I sometimes forget what really matters—family, friends, and spending time with Shannen. I justify the madness by saying it’ll give us the life we want, but the truth is, sometimes you have to step back. Like in training, missing a session now and then won’t ruin the big picture.
2) It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
I’m a perfectionist, which ironically slows me down. I overthink, tweak things you’ll never notice, and doubt if I’m giving my best. That’s why I paused the newsletter—I wasn’t sure if it was valuable. But I’ve realised it’s not about perfection; it’s about sharing my thoughts, keeping you updated, and hopefully inspiring you to get out and move!
3) Doubting Myself
Tribal pushes me daily—registering a business, running two clubs on opposite sides of the world, launching a cycle club, coaching athletes. It’s all new, and some days I don’t know if I can do it… or even what “it” is! Unlike running, there’s no finish line. But that’s what makes it fun—growth happens outside the comfort zone. (P.S. Don’t stay in Zone 2 too long… more on that later.)
4) Ditch the Plan & Enjoy Life
Life’s for living! Like training, sometimes you need to step back and just run with your mates. If you swap a tempo session for a social 10K, it won’t derail your progress—it might just reignite your love for it. And if a coach tells you otherwise, well… they’re probably a bit insecure about their own coaching.
Adaptability = Consistency
Everything worth doing takes longer than you think. Just start, and don’t worry about the clock. Scale it down if you need to, make it easier if you’re tired—just keep showing up in whatever way you can.
While I was quiet on emails, I was busy launching the Tribal merchandise site and coaching some legends. If you fancy a Tribal singlet or tee, grab one here: https://tribalrunclub.square.site/
As always, this is your run club—I just facilitate it.
Cheers,
Ryan
